Sachem North Senior Ethan Edelman Conducts Research at Cornell University

Sachem High School North senior science research student Ethan Edelman completed an internship at Cornell University in August, gaining hands-on fieldwork and laboratory research experience.

Working alongside undergraduate and doctoral students, Edelman investigated how harmful algal blooms affect the production and cycling of toxic methylmercury in aquatic ecosystems. His work contributed to research with potential global implications, as harmful algal blooms and mercury contamination pose significant threats to environmental and public health.

Edelman credited his Science Research teacher, Mr. McGrath, with helping him develop the skills necessary to pursue the opportunity.

“Every day, he encourages us to apply all of our knowledge before guiding us toward the next step,” Edelman said. “I highly encourage high school students to participate in Science Research, or at least give it a try. It is a fantastic way to discover what truly interests you, especially if you are planning to attend college.”

Edelman also thanked Donovan, the doctoral student who supervised his work, for the internship opportunity.

“It was truly amazing to gain hands-on experience in both fieldwork and laboratory research,” he said.

Edelman also thanked his teachers, including Ms. Bhalla, as well as his friends and family, for their continued support and encouragement as he pursues his academic and career goals.
